Goytre - 6

Newport Civil Service - 1

AFTER being labeled the 'nearly-men' for a couple of seasons, Goytre have finally put an end to their dark days of bondage in Welsh League Division Three when their long pursued promotion dream finally became a reality on Saturday.

The Plough Road brigade's last outing of the season saw them take to the field in midweek against a dismal Newport Civil Service side, and on the evidence of that game both teams seemed to be in the wrong division as Goytre showed their class and Newport Civil Service merely showed up.

Luke Prosser was again on target for a brace, Rich Jeremiah came up trumps with a well taken header, and Simon Truman and Kyle Bassett also added some extra punch to proceedings with some nicely-executed strikes.

There was also a spectacular back-headed own goal from an enormous Scott James goal-kick, as Goytre ended the match doing all they could to give themselves the best possible chance of promotion.

Come Saturday and player/manager Carl Evans's Goytre were eagerly awaiting the outcome of the match between lowly Newport Civil Service and third-placed outfit Briton Ferry Llanswel.

Played at Shannon Close in Bettws, the Plough road lads needed NCS to avoid defeat so they could join league champions Undy Athletic in Welsh League Division Two for the 2012/13 season.

Disaster struck for Goytre when NCS slumped to a 4-0 defeat and burst the Plough Road bubble.

Yet the mood of the Goytre contingent soon lifted when news came through the backdoor that fourth-placed Bridgend Street had lost 2-0 to Abertillery Bluebirds.

With a promotion place finally secured, spirits soared and a jubilant player/secretary Simon Ritter enthused, "We are obviously delighted at securing promotion, especially given the extra competition we faced with five sides seeking the three promotion spots.

"We've managed to combine exciting young talent with some vital experience which has been missing in previous years.

"Our thanks go to player-manager Carl Evans and his first-team squad for putting together a magnificent run of 15 wins from 16 games and to all our supporters and sponsors.

"The squad Carl has assembled is the best Goytre has had and we hope to retain everyone to mount a serious challenge on Division Two next season."
