THE sun was shining at Blackweir Fields as Llanarth looked for back to back away wins in their bid to consolidate their position in Conference Two. The home team won the toss and elected to bat on a slow, low wicket with smallish but perfectly serviceable boundaries and were immediately in trouble as Lomax (4-37) removed both openers in his first two overs. Vaughan was keeping wicket and early on showed that should a career in his chosen profession not materialise he could easily fall back on cymbal playing, though he could laugh at his detractors when he pouched a very smart chance to give Lomax his third victim. The Trees were completely in charge when debutant Page struck in his first over to leave WA 54-4 from 18 overs. However there then followed a passage of 14 overs where Llanarth's cricket was at best sloppy. It began when Baxter spilled a regulation chance to remove Swati for seven, who then thrashed a hard hit 71 as the score raced to 154-4. Baxter (4-21) was introduced into the attack to try to make amends and thankfully removed both well set batsmen to reduce some of the damage. So poor had The Trees cricket been that following Baxter's first incision coach Proctor was moved to administer a mid-wicket hairdryer, a device he personally has no use for, to the players. With minds back on the job Llanarth managed to dismiss WA for 205, that although an acceptable target was a good 60 more than should have been attained. Following tea Lomax and Baxter (28) strode to the crease looking to make inroads into the victory target and although they began slowly they were soon into their stride and it was a surprise when the latter was late on a straight one and bowled with the score at 81 in the 18th over. Dewfield (26) joined Lomax and the pair looked to be easing to victory until Swati managed to tie one end down with some accurate slow bowling, accurate that is apart from his attempted doosras that were clearly chucked and caused much hilarity on both teams when he alone protested their legality. Nevertheless he slowed the run rate and when Dewfield departed 39 were required from eight overs. Lomax (114*) ensured there was to be no drama as he hammered maximums in consecutive overs, also completing a fabulous century as he and Proctor knocked off the remaining runs to bag the Trees a maximum haul of 26 points.
