MANY cyclists have ridden as youngsters in the Abergavenny Festival of Cycling and then gone onto do great things. The town's own multiple world champion Becky James and Wales' Commonwealth Games team member Sam Harrison are two who rode in the Welsh Open Circuit Races as teenagers. One of those young winners last Friday evening has a famous mother and father. Zoe Backstedt, from Pontyclun, won the Under-10 girls competition from Anwen Roberts and Ella Maclean-Howell. Zoe should know how to ride a bike well as her father, Magnus Backstedt, is a former professional who won the world famous French one-day Classic ride Paris-Roubaix in 2004, while her mum, Megan, won the British National Women's Road Race title in 1998. Rebecca Codd and Finlay Tarling were the youngest winners of the night as both took the Under-eights titles. Josh Tanning won the Boys Under-10 crown while Emma Sinncane and Rhys Thomas took the Girls and Boys Under-12s prizes. Ella Barnell was triumphant in the Girls Under-14 category, with Matthew Burke winning the Boys title in that age group. Finally, the mid-teen races saw Peter Kibble and Jess Roberts win the Boys and Girls Under-15 races respectively.
