Abergavenny Squash Club’s ‘E’ team travelled to Monmouth ‘D’ to play the side lying bottom and surprisingly lost 3-2. Gary Hortop won convincingly, and captain Tony Davies managed to sneak a win in five sets, but the remaining matches were lost without gaining a set. As a result, the team drop into fourth place.

On the following night, the ‘D’ team entertained a Monmouth ‘B’ side, who are chasing promotion, and lost 4-1. Once again, as in the previous week, the highlight of the match was provided by Chris Owen, who, having lost the first two sets, won the next three! The team remain in sixth place, but are now 13 points adrift from the side above it, and relegation now looms!

The ‘C’ team played host to a strong Llanishen side with a much weakened team beset with injuries, and lost all five matches. The bottom three players performed valiantly, but to no avail. To make matters worse, news was received from the South Wales league that four teams will be relegated at the end of the season, which means that, with three matches remaining, the side is too far back to remain in the division. Can they bounce back in the spring? Let’s hope so!

Rob Phillips lost 3-0

Gary Hortop lost 3-1

James Gillam lost 3-0

On the same night, the ‘B’ team visited the league leaders Hirwuan ‘A’, and gave them a trouncing, winning by four matches to one. The side was at its strongest, and it showed, with only newcomer Ed Leakey coming unstuck, losing 3-0. The team remain in third place, but only eight points covers first to third, so next week’s match against the side lying second now becomes crucial in the quest for promotion.

Ellis Lawrence won 3-0

Anthony Squire won 3-1

Gareth Hughes-Jones won 3-1

Finally, the ‘A’ team visited Cardiff with a weakened team and only just lost 3-2, which was a creditable effort given the circumstances. Again, both Dai Hill and Mark Nicholls performed valiantly, but were unable to gain a point. However, the team remain in fifth place, and should stay up.
