Abergavenny Squash Club’s ‘E’ team entertained a strong Abertillery team vying for promotion, and just lost by three matches to two. Peter Sturgess managed to win his match by default, with his opponent retiring in the second set with a pulled muscle, and Tony Davies won in five sets. The match came down to the wire with Chris Carver losing 17-15 in the fifth set. The team remain in third place, but have played one more match than the team just behind it.

On the same night, the ‘D’ team visited Newport and lost 4-1. The highlight of the match was the performance of Chris Owen, who, having lost the first two sets, outlasted his opponent, winning the next three. The team drop into sixth place, but have a game in hand on this Newport side, and so should get fifth place back in the near future.

The ‘C’ team travelled to Monmouth to play the league leader, and was trounced 5-0! Only Rob Phillips was able to collect a set, but this Monmouth side is very strong, being lead and coached by a former Premier ‘A’ player. The team is in sixth place, but only four points cover the bottom three sides, so it will be tough to avoid relegation.

The ‘B’ team hosted Cowbridge, and had yet another thumping 5-0 victory! All the players had convincing wins, with only Gareth Hughes-Jones dropping a set. Mention should be made with regard to Ed Leakey, who was playing his first match for the club, winning in straight sets. The team is now in third place, one point behind the team in second place, and the next two weeks will be critical, as the team will be playing both first and second.

The ‘A’ team played at home to the bottom side, Barry Leisure ‘A’, and won easily by five matches to nil. The team did not drop a set, and remain in fifth place, well clear of the relegation zone.
