Bettws RFC - 3
Crickhowell RFC - 56
Crickhowell RFC travelled to Bettws on the weekend and stormed to yet another emphatic win.
However, it was the home team who started strongly, when they forced Crickhowell back into their own half and succeeded in slotting over a penalty.
It was to be their only score of the game, as despite their sterling efforts they were unable to contain a rampant Crickhowell who soon gained the upper hand and went on to score ten tries. The first followed a lineout where Crick set up a strong rolling maul and got the ball to full-back Leon Rees who went over in the corner. Next to score was the powerful and elusive number eight Ryan James, who picked up the ball from the base of a scrum on the Bettws 22 and burst through to touch down.
After being awarded a penalty for not releasing in the tackle, prop Kenny Birch made his way across field and with a sleight of hand passed to Rees in support who went over for his second try, which he also converted.
The next try saw Harry Purvis elude tacklers and pass to Matt Botting who ran in under the posts, with Rees again converting.
With the forwards dominating the scrums, the work of the flanker at the breakdown and Tom Keane controlling the play at outside-half, it was the elusive Harry Summers on the wing who scored next in the corner.
This was followed with a thrilling length-of-the-field effort after a line out on the Crick five-yard line. Prop Andy Nicholls secured the ball, passed to Ed Jones who made his way upfield. Lewis Logan made more yards then passed to scrum-half Lewys Cooke who completed the run to touch down between the posts, affording Leon Rees the opportunity to score his third conversion of the day.
With the half-time score at 3-36 the second half followed much the same pattern as the first. Flanker Tom Canning was first to cross the whitewash. Matt Botting was next, scoring in the corner. it was then the turn of “Intercity” Harry Purvis to score. Despite his dazzling run his attempt at the conversion was not so spectacular and several moles were spotted scurrying for cover after his kick. With Danny Davies, Jake Powell-Thomas and Lewis Logan once again putting in some excellent work, the game was rounded off by Tony Perry on the wing with his trademark turn of speed and tenacity.
The official score was wrongly recorded as being 3-48. No doubt the number of tries confusing the opposition scorekeeper.
This Saturday sees Abersychan Alexanders visiting Parc Broyd with a 2.30pm kick-off.
