Abergavenny RFC - 18

Pill Harriers RFC - 8

Abergavenny returned to league action last Wednesday with a victory over Pill Harriers at Bailey Park.

Aber were able to field a side that was close to the strongest that they can select with a front row of Ryan Morgan, captain Gareth Williams and Rob Lothian, the two Dans, Morris and Horler in the second row, and Dan Beavan, C J Woodhouse and Josh Hitchman completing the pack.

Sam Phillips and Rhod Webster were the half backs, Gareth Beavan and Jacob Butler continued their centre partnership and Will Williams, Dan Dunmore and Lloyd Holder made up the back three.

The visitors started the game sharper than the home side and put Aber under pressure for long periods. They were eventually rewarded when Abergavenny were stripped of the ball and the Pill scrum ran over unopposed to score an unconverted try.

The home side now woke up and started to play some good controlled rugby, putting the pressure on Pill, which resulted in two penalties from Rhodri Webster, enabling Aber to take a 6-5 lead.

On the stroke of half time Pill kicked a penalty to make it 6-8.

The second-half began with a bang and a good old fashion brawl which resulted in two red cards, one for each team, which left Aber with only thirteen men on the pitch following an earlier violation.

This seemed to stir Genny into action and they played some of their best rugby. After constant pressure and good team work, Dan Horler went over for a try converted by Webster.

From the kick off the home side were back on the offensive and with the best movement of the game, centre Jacob Butler crossed for a unconverted try to give Aber a 18-8 lead and a much deserved victory.

On Tuesday, May 17, Abergavenny play Blackwood Stars in a Ben Francis cup final at Usk rugby club. Kick off is at 7.30pm and all support would be much appreciated.
