ICTURED is Abergavenny squash Club’s Mike Logan who was one of the Welsh squad who competed in the Masters Home Internationals played at Cardiff last month.
Logan was part of the Over 55 Men’s Team who beat Scotland 3-2, defeated Ireland 4-1, but who unfortunately lost to England 5-0.
The UK Squash Masters Home Internationals take place annually across four weekends in April - May. Cardiff hosted the first set of matches, with the Over 35 Men, Over 55 Men and Women, and the Over 75 Men all competing with teams from Wales, Scotland, Ireland and England.
The Wales Over 55 Men’s team was Mike Workman, Simon Bourge, Mike Logan, Gary Hales (Captain), Jon Evans and Tony Smith. Mike Logan was making his international debut, having come third in the Welsh Open Masters tournament in December.
Wales played Scotland in their first match on Friday, April 20, and narrowly beat them 3-2 with wins from Jon Evans, Gary Hales and Mike Workman. Mike Logan was 2-0 ahead, but then lost 2-3 to a more experienced opponent.
Wales then beat Ireland 4-1 on the following Saturday morning, which set up an afternoon title decider against England, who had also beaten Scotland and Ireland.
Mike Logan was again tested by an experienced opponent, and fought from behind to reach 2-2 against the English number 4. But Mike was defeated once again in the final set, losing 3-2. The Welsh team lost 5-0 to claim the Runners Up position, leaving England with bragging rights at the Presentation Evening.
England dominated the other age groups too, winning all four competitions. The Welsh Over 35 Mens team came third, the Wales Over 55 Women’s team also came third, and the veteran Welsh Over 75 Men’s team came second.
Mike Logan achieved a lifelong ambition to represent his country, and hopes to qualify again next year, when the Over 55s will be playing in Galway, Ireland.
