AFTER nearly a six month lay-off, Welsh champ Kieran Gething will be returning to the ring later this month when he faces up and coming Londoner Mikey Sayki in the East End’s Bethnal Green as part of the Super Lightweight Golden Contract Tournament.
Gething admits that his bout against the 29-year-old Southern Area super-lightweight champion will be his toughest to date, but it also has the potential to really take his career to another level.
“I was over the moon when I was handed the opportunity. It’s a chance to be part of something huge and I can’t wait to fight against a fellow champion like Sakyi” explained Gething.
Gething will be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s best 140lb fighters when he heads to the York Hall on November 22.
Fighters such as Ohara Davies, Tyrone McKenna, Zhankosh Turarov, Lewis Benson, Anthony Yigit, Mohamed Mimoune, Darren Surtees and Logan Yoon are also appearing on the same bill, but it’s the man who has four knock-outs to his name and likes to hit hard, that Gething will be focusing his energies and attention on.
“Sayki will be definitely problematic make no doubt about it,” said Gething. “But his natural style seems to be slow-paced which will suit me. I think he’ll be looking for the big punch from the get-go but I know I’ve got the skills to box clever, avoid the hits, and pick up the points.”
Gething added, “Sayki is a popular character and he’s from Romford so he’ll definitely have the London crowd on side, but it’s a big fight for him as well because whoever wins it is going to get plenty of publicity and exposure.”
Gething’s last fight was against Craig Woodruff on June 1, and despite being unhappy with the long lay-off, he’s grateful that the waiting game has paid off and he now has the opportunity to shine under a massive spotlight.
Gething told the Chronicle, “The whole tournament will be go out on Sky Sports and I’m hoping to be on there or on the ‘Facebook bout’ streamed live. I’ve been training well and have had quality sparring partners such as Joe Hughes to work with so I’m feeling super good and super confident. I truly believe this is where you’ll see me at my best. I think it’s not just down to motivation, it’s down to being in the right atmosphere and something like this will be the making of my career.”
