West End FC 2-
Abergavenny Town FC - 2
TOWN made the long trip to the Mayhill district of Swansea, and were rewarded in the first five minutes when Rhys Tandy’s shot was parried by West End’s goalkeeper but Dan Hartland was on hand to bury the rebound.
West End, seemingly doomed to relegation, soon showed that they will go down fighting and Tom Indge in Town’s goal was kept busy throughout.
After 15 minutes he had to be sharp to tip a shot over his crossbar and five minutes later West End were unlucky when hitting the woodwork.
It was Town who scored next when Hartland fizzed in a cross from the right and in a crowded goalmouth Nathan Davies got the final touch to give the Town a deserved half-time lead.
It was a different story in the second half, when Town were often pinned back in their half and had difficulty in finding an outlet.
West End’s pressure told after five minutes, when they scored from close range, and ten minutes later they would have drawn level but Indge produced a magnificent save from a header which seemed certain to land in the back of the net.
When Town did break, they produced some decent efforts, with Richard Jeremiah coming closest in skimming the crossbar.
Fifteen minutes from the end saw the most controversial moment of the game when Callum Davies was yellow carded for a strong tackle amid howls of protest from West End that he should have been sent off.
It was only two minutes later that the referee awarded West End a free kick, and then spotted a handball by Town as the ball was played into the box. This time, no Indge heroics could save Town as West End levelled from the spot, and grabbed a point.
After a run of six consecutive away fixtures, Town return to Pen-y-Pound Stadium this Saturday (ko 2.30pm), in their final home match of the season, and are hoping for a quick-fire double over neighbours Croesyceiliog whom they beat 1-3 a fortnight ago.
Town’s reserve side, who were without a fixture last Saturday, travel to Croesyceiliog Reserves.
Meanwhile, Town’s youth side broke all records in recording an 11-0 demolition of Merthyr Saints at Pen-y-Pound last Sunday. Lance Lewis led the goal scoring with four goals, and one each from Dan Bowden, Alex Francis, Sam Jones, Brad Daniels, Will Owens, Elliot Simmonds and Lloyd Francis, as they propel themselves to second place in the league table.
