Aberbargoed Buds FC - 2
Abergavenny Town FC - 1
AFTER their lengthy trip to Trefelin the previous weekend, Abergavenny Town made the much shorter Journey to Aberbargoed on Saturday, hopeful they could emulate their home and way double of last season.
Sadly this was not the case.
The Buds started well and had the majority of the attacking play for the first 20 minutes, but the Town’s back four held firm with Ross Davies dominating the centre of defence and having his best game of an already distinguished season.
Together with Jac Evans they are forming a formidable defensive partnership, and are well supported by Drew Heffernan and Callum Evans.
The Town started to settle into the game and just before half-time scored what turned out to be the best goal of the game, when the ball was moved to the ever alert Rhys Tandy who spotted a clever run by Dan Jenkins who then squared the ball for Sean Feeley slot home to make it 0-1 at half time.
The travelling Town supporters now expected their side to take charge of the game, but this was not the case as it was the ‘Buds’ who were pushing forward.
Their efforts brought them reward on 55 minutes when they scored through Owen Thomas. The decisive goal which was to seal Town’s fate came after 73 minutes when Shane Brewer gave the Buds the lead for the first time which they held until the final whistle.
In what was a bad weekend for the Town, their youthful reserve side, fresh from a magnificent away win at Blaenavon Blues in mid-week, were no match for a very experienced Cwmffrwdoer side. Holding them to 0-2 at the break, the old heads of Cwmffrwdoer finally ran out 0-7 winners.
On Saturday, Town’s Welsh League side return home, entertaining newly promoted Penydarren BGC (2.30pm), who enjoyed a fine run in the FAW Trophy last season before going out at the quarter final stage, whilst the reserves travel to Fairfield Utd (3.00pm).
