Rhyl Ladies - 1

Abergavenny Women - 5

THE Abergavenny Women knew patience was the name of the game when dealing with a physical Rhyl outfit, and as always, the waiting game had its own reward.

With both teams looking to protect their 100% start to the season it was an even first quarter with defenses very much on top.

On the half hour mark Rhyl failed to deal with a Lauren Boyd free kick from the right and the impressive Maxine Mudge fired home from close range to break the deadlock.

The second was a superb individual effort from Welsh international Amy Thrupp who picked the ball up in the centre circle, drove forward and unleashed a thumping left foot strike into the bottom corner.

When Mudge fired home just before the interval, following good work down the left from Boyd, it was very much game over.

An early substitution in the second half saw Laura Davies replaced by Gabi Hughes, who made an immediate impact, scoring from close range following a Kate Jeremiah cross which wasn’t cleared. 15-year-old Eliza Atkins came on and was denied a goal after a good shot was well saved.

Atkins then went on a 70 yard run and linked up with Lyndsey Davies but it came to nothing.

Rhyl scored a consolation goal through their substitute who hammered home a thunderbolt from 35 yards, which keeper Charlotte Hastings did well to get fingertips on.

Lauren Boyd finished the scoring with another fine shot from outside the area.

It’s early days but Abergavenny sit on top of the league and are looking forward to champions Swansea City coming to town.
