THE excellent form shown by Cycle Club Abergavenny’s National MTB Grand Veteran Champion Tim Davies has continued into early summer with a number of fine racing performances in both national and regional events.

The second weekend of May saw a long, but worthwhile journey to Round Three of the National MTB Cross Country Points Series held in Glentress in Scotland where a race long battle ensued with old professional adversary Tim Gould. Davies was delighted to run out victor in the Grand Veteran category. Davies’ eldest son Spencer also experienced racing at a national level with 16th place in the Youth category race. It was then back onto home turf the for the Davies family the following weekend at the Welsh MTB Cross Country Championships held at Aberystwyth. Davies was crowned Grand Veteran Champion and sons Spencer and Oscar both secured top ten placings with fifth and fouth places in the Youth and Under 12 races respectively. The month was rounded off with a switch to the road for all three at the Welsh Criterium Championships, promoted as part of the Aberystwyth Cycling Festival, and where Davies secured a silver medal in the Over 50s race.

June has seen the trio return to MTB racing, kicking off the month with fine performances in Round Three of the Welsh MTB Cross Country Series at Llangattock. Davies finished in second place in the Grand Veteran category and both of Davies’ sons secured top five positions in their respective categories. Sunday, June 10 saw a return to the National MTB Points Series on a fast and technical circuit in Suffolk. Davies’ second place here secured the overall series to go with his overall victory in the same series in 2017. The weekend of June 16-17 saw back-to-back races for Davies who competed in the Legends Cross Country event at the Malvern Classic on the Saturday and Round Four of the Welsh MTB Cross Country Series at Builth Wells on the Sunday. Spectators at both events were not to be disappointed. The former Alpinestars professional rider competed in the Malvern Classic astride his 1992 race bike decked out in full Alpinestars racing kit. In Sunday’s event Davies secured victory in the Grand Veteran category race and also won the £50 prime for the fastest lap recorded by a rider on a Giant manufactured bike. Davies’ sons also secured top ten positions in their respective races.
