Abergavenny RFC - 25

Risca - 14

ABERGAVENNY'S unbeaten start to the season came to an end at Bailey Park against a sharp and very well drilled Risca team.

Aber fielded a settled team and the game started at a furious pace with Risca fully intent on running the ball and putting Aber under serious pressure.

The Clarets defended heroically but eventually their line was breached by the Risca scrum half who scored a converted try under the posts.

The visitors increased their lead soon after with a simple penalty goal and with the yellow carding of CJ Woodhouse things looked ominous for Abergavenny.

However, in the last ten minutes of the half Aber applied the pressure and turned it into points with two penalties kicked by Lewis Evans to make it 10-6 at the interval.

Abergavenny started the second half all systems go but it was Risca who scored an unconverted try against the run of play to make it 15-6.

From the restart Abergavenny continued to attack the Cuckoos at every opportunity and were rewarded with a successful penalty by Lewis Evans.

The Clarets now had their tails up and when full back Ryan Williams was put in the clear on the ten metre line he capitalised with an unconverted try.

The game was very evenly balanced with either side looking to seal the victory. Abergavenny's chances crashed time and time again against a determined Risca defence, and in the last minute of the game a wayward kick and some slack defence allowed Risca to score under the post and win the day.

Sadly this week the club lost loyal member Terry Richards. Tecker was a former player, captain and coach and was one of rugby's true characters. He will be sadly missed by all at Abergavenny RFC.
