Crickhowell High School’s Girls Badminton Team successfully defended the title they won last year at the Badminton Wales Top Schools Finals.
Held at Newtown Leisure Centre, the event saw the top three teams from the North Wales Finals meeting the top three teams from the South Wales Finals.
Each team was made up of four players with matches consisting of five games, two singles and three doubles.
As usual competition was very keen but in the Girls section the defending champs, Crickhowell High School, fielded last year’s winning team of Katie Whiteman, Bethany Jones, Aimie Whiteman and Lucie Whiteman, and the girls put in an outstanding performance to win each match by a margin of five games to love.
In taking the title once again, Crickhowell matched last year’s record of not conceding a single game in the whole competition.
In the Boys Section, defending champions Crickhowell had to field a much younger team with three of last year’s player now over age.
Competition in the group stages was fierce and Crickhowell narrowly missed out on qualification for the final. However, they did qualify for the play offs and in an exciting match against Queen Elizabeth High School they managed to secure third place.
With Ollie Stansfield and Isaac Frost playing their part it was left to the youngest members of the team, Will Vaughan and Archie Bult, to clinch the match with a dramatic win over experienced opponents in the last of the doubles matches.
Overall a great result for both teams.
