ABERGAVENNY’S Tom Norton has been busy hitting them for six and pushing the boundaries in the cricketing world.

The talented ten-year-old has spent the summer traveling the length and breadth of the UK representing Wales.

And it doesn’t stop there. When the burgeoning batsman who attends Cantref Primary School wasn’t taking to the crease under the banner of the dragon he was representing Gwent and his home club Abergavenny all over Cymru and beyond.

Tom appeared in a total of 45 matches last season. And that’s an impressive number by anyone’s standards.

Proud mum Kelly told the Chronicle, “Tom has always loved cricket. He started playing when he was six and was picked to play for Gwent U10s when he was eight. And then when he was nine he went on a summer tour with Gwent and caught everybody’s eyes with some impressive scores.”

Kelly added, “He was picked for the Welsh trials in the September of 2016. And then in May of this year he was selected for a place in the final squad.”

Tom who is also a keen tennis player has something of a sporting pedigree. His grandfather Des Norton was a goalkeeper for the Abergavenny Thursdays. Des played for the club during their ‘golden era’ in the 1960s and later returned to the club to become an integral part of the team that won promotion to Welsh League Division One in the 1975/76 season. Des also used to play cricket for Abergavenny.

And Tom’s great grandfather on his maternal side was RT Evans. The Abergavenny flanker who went on to play for both Wales and the British Lions.

Tom’s mother Kelly added, “We’re all very proud of what Tom has already achieved. It’s really lovely to see him carry on a great sporting tradition within the family.”
