ON a damp, autumnal afternoon Abergavenny skipper Steve Brown won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Sudbrook to have first use of a wet, sticky track.
Raghav and young Dylan Beaumont-Welsh opened the bowling for the Beavers II and kept the Sudbrook openers honest with a tight line and length - both bowlers were rewarded with a wicket for their efforts.
Sudbrook number three Ed Neale had designs on the Aber attack and punished anything in his half with clean strikes over the in-field. He and skipper Ian Simmonds had moved the Sudbrook score to 70-2 inside the first 12 overs and were set to post a challenging total on a tough wicket.
Enter the Abergavenny hero - 14-year-old Meici Jones - who operated for a mesmerising five over stint from the Pen-y-Pound end with a bamboozling spell of off and leg cutters.
The Sudbrook charge was well and truly halted and the score went from 70-2, to 87 all out within a crazy 10 overs period.
Meici enjoyed his first ever five-wicket haul for the Beavers, returning superb match figures of 5-6. Steve Brown operated in tandem with Jones and helped himself to 3-18 as the Sudbrook innings closed with less than half of their allotted 45 overs used.
In an immediate turnaround, Abergavenny openers Gareth Powell and Nathan Holley were intent on seeing the side home to their modest target, but also had one eye on the weather as the forecast showers closed in.
With a well-judged acceleration towards the finish line, Abergavenny just managed to get the job done before a huge downpour threatened to curtail their hard work. Powell finishing on 49* and Holley 33* to see the Beavers II home by 10 wickets.
This was a welcome 20 points for the home side and moves them off the bottom of the table.
