Abergavenny CC’s first team welcomed last season’s champions Chepstow to Avenue Road, knowing a tough test was in store for their young side which has seen a number of changes throughout the winter.
Abergavenny lost the toss and were asked to bat first and unfortunately lost a wicket in the second over.
Will Glenn and Lewis Holley scored freely in a partnership of 43 before Glenn departed caught behind for a well made 21, Holley soon followed for 27 slipped to 66-4.
Steve Brown and David Clarke rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 36 until Brown was dismissed for 19 and unfortunately wickets fell regularly with Clarke being last man out for a well made 33 as Abergavenny were dismissed for 141 in 38 overs.
In reply Chepstow got off to poor start losing Ben Jones for 0, bowled by David Clarke. After this though opener Carwyn James and the evergreen David Teague scored freely putting on a partnership of 60 before James fell for 31 to a simple catch at mid wicket off the bowling of captain Leach.
Chepstow skipper Huggett then joined Teague at the crease and took the score to 110 before he fell, bowled by young Sam Clarke, but any chances of a Abergavenny comeback were quashed with Teague finishing 59 not out as Chepstow sealed a seven wicket win.
Overall a difficult day for the young Abergavenny side but plenty of positives can be taken from how some of the young players equipped themselves against last year’s league champions. Hopefully with some more confidence and experience the results will come.
