Last Saturday was disappointing for Usk as both the first and second teams lost to their counterparts from Chepstow.

Over at Chepstow, the hosts won the toss and elected to field. This proved a sound decision as the Usk batsmen struggled. Six players made it into double figures, with Henry Lewis top scoring with 29. The visitors were all out for 137 in 38.5 overs. For Chepstow, Tudor Morgan-Huggett and Dave Teague each picked up three wickets.

Despite an early wicket for James Aston, Chepstow had little problem chasing down their modest target. Carwyn James (42) and Mitchell Harris (75*) knocking off the majority of the runs between them. Chepstow cantered to their target, ending up on 140-2 from just 22.2 overs; a victory by eight wickets.

Meanwhile back at the Athletic Club Ground the locals were treated to a high scoring encounter. Captain for the day, Mark Tamplin, won the toss and decided to field in a match which was reduced to 40 overs per side. This looked a poor decision as openers Scott Bailey (70) and Jamie Rayner (98) took the attack to Usk; however, once both departed the Usk bowlers then fought to get their side back into the game as Chepstow were all out for 270 from exactly 40 overs. Greg Peacock finished with the impressive figures of 8-1-38-4.

Although Usk suffered the loss of an early wicket in reply, Mark Tamplin (80) and Dominic Rees (64) kept Usk in the hunt. With Jimmy Spencer (30) weighing in down the order, an improbable victory looked possible; however, Usk fell short as the last man was dismissed with just three balls remaining. Usk were all out for 255; a defeat by 15 runs.

This Saturday sees Usk firsts entertaining Croesyceiliog, while the seconds travel to Welsh Asians. The firsts’ match will begin at 12:30pm (a 50-over contest), while the seconds will commence their 45-over game at 1pm. On Sunday, Usk play a friendly away to Chepstow beginning at 2pm.
