AFTER last week’s disappointing defeat to Croesyceiliog, Abergavenny made the trip to Usk on the weekend.

Morgan Bevans, who was out second ball last week, appeared to have heeded some timely words of advice from Malcolm Nash and carried his bat a lot better this time around.

Usk admittedly are not the force they were and were bowled out for just 115. Adam Harrison was their chief destroyer (3-23), ably supported by Dan Cooke, David Clarke and Ben Davies, who each took two wickets pretty cheaply.

Young Dylan Beaumont-Welsh also chipped in with one for 10 from his four overs.

Abergavenny were fortunate to have the services back of Andrew Jones who since 2002 has scored over 7000 runs for the club with 22 centuries and 42 fifties. However, he was out without scoring as Abergavenny began their chase.

Aber slipped to 43-4 but young Morgan Bevans batted very responsibly for his 43 not out and Adam Harrison followed up his bowling with an undefeated 35.

They reached their target in 36 overs for the loss of five wickets. Greg Fury (176), Lewis Holley (10).

The Second XI were at home to Crumlin and also won pretty convincingly with another century from Garth Powell.

Crumlin batted first and reached 158 all out in the 25th over. The wickets were spread out - Ben Morris (1-26), Matthew Knight (1-28), Gavin Nash (2-64), Skipper Steve Brown (3-26), and Chai Sanapala (2-10).

The reply was dominated by Gareth Powell with an undefeated 114. Tom Pipe was the only wicket to fall for 10 and Lee Fury scored 24 not out. The game was over in the 27th over.

Abergavenny thirds were away at Sudbrook and invited to bat. They accumulated 257-7 in their 40 overs with a number of contributions, the most significant was from Luke Bowen (87).

Support came from Ieaun Fury (27), Kyle Holmes (13), James Rhydderch-Roberts (19), Will Jones (11), Mark Winstanley (45*) and Richard James (34). In reply Sudbrook never really threatened the target with all five of Abergavenny’s bowlers among the wickets, the best being Lewys-Wilkes- McCarthy (3-25), Owain Bradley (2-29), Hugh Griffiths, Richard James and Alex Holmes with one wicket each.
