After three seasons during which they only fielded one senior side in Saturday league fixtures, Llanarth Cricket Club has this season resurrected a second team.
Taking advantage of a change in the regulations which allows surplus players in one club to play for another that is short-handed, Llanarth has teamed up with Usk Cricket Club to enter a second team in the newly merged South East Wales Cricket League.
Last Saturday saw the merged team take to the field for the first time when they ran out handsome winners against Mountain Ash seconds.
With a philosophy focussed on ensuring everyone plays a part, skipper Keith Spencer used eight bowlers, six of whom took a wicket, including 13-year-olds Morgan Bain and Tom Welford.
12-year-old Will Heath put in a starring performance in the field with a sharp catch at point and lightning ground fielding culminating with a run out from a direct hit with only one stump to aim at from square leg.
With Josh Masih. Josh Hardwick and Jonathan Helm each taking a couple of wickets Mountain Ash were dismissed for 113.
The Llanarth innings got off to a steady start with the first wicket going down at 24 in the 13th over however the tempo was raised by 15 year old Ollie Mitchell who smashed his first ball for four and soon followed it with a couple more boundaries before playing all round a straight one.
Two more wickets fell quickly and with the score on 55 for four the game was in the balance. Once more it was Will Heath who stood up to be counted coming in and playing very comfortably, running well with his partner and together they took the score to 78 before Josh Hardwick was out for a well made 46. He was replaced by Os Knight who made short work of the remaining run chase with six fours in his 28 not out. Will Heath also carried his bat to complete an impressive debut at senior level.
