GILWERN’S lady bowlers played two Pen y Glyn league games last week, at home to Blaina followed next day by a trip to Trelewis.

They won on one rink but lost on two to miss out 56-48 against Blaina, the only success Pam Healy’s rink, which took control early on and won 20-14.

Sheila Howells’ rink was eight shots behind at halfway, but fought back to 13-16, while Anne Konieczny’s rink had a six-shot advantage after 10 ends, but 19 shots without reply saw them lose 13-26.

At Trelewis in difficult conditions, they lost on two of the three rinks to miss out 51-44.

Pam Healy’s rink made a good start and won 18-12, but Anne Konieczny’s rink lost by the same score.

Sheila Howells’ rink had a 16-shot deficit after 10 ends, and did well to reduce this to 14-21.

On Saturday, Gilwern’s Monmouthshire BA team visited Belle Vue in Newport and won on three rinks to triumph 86-68.

Mark Wells’ rink won 30-11, but it was closer on Brian Hughes’ rink until they forged ahead over the third quarter to win 23-16.

It was even closer on Richard Davis’ rink but they managed to secure victory scoring nine shots over the third quarter to win 16-14.

Mick Axford’s rink had a five-shot advantage after 10 ends, but then conceded 19 shots to lose 17-27.

A midweek East Monmouthshire two-rink game at Bailey Park ended in defeat on both rinks, while on Sunday Gilwern missed out on four rinks in a five-rink friendly at home to Ross-on-Wye.

The successful Gilwern rink was Martin Doughty’s, scoring nine shots over the final five ends to win 21-10.

Other rink scores were Jill Howells 12-15, Gwen Axford 12-13, Mike Axford 13-24 and Ken Christie 7-21.

This Thursday (6th) Gilwern’s ladies visit Beaufort and Crickhowell next Monday (10th).

The men’s MBA team welcome PILCS on Saturday (8th) for a league game.
