GILWERN Bowls Club held their Founders Day on Sunday, where all members played in a one-day competition.

The eventual winners of the trophy were Jill Howells, Alwyn Jones, Derek Tyler and Cedric Matheson, who defeated Ann Whomersley, Mike Powell and Bob Reeves in the final.

The Founders Day Plate was won by Byron Jones, Ken Christie and Richard Dixon.

Meanwhile, Gilwern Bowling Club’s ladies played two of their remaining four league matches at Guest Memorial BC and Beaufort BC last week.

They lost on all three rinks to miss out 63-35 at Guest.

Pam Healy’s rink was two shots ahead after nine ends, but missed out 16-11.

Anne Konieczny’s rink conceded shots through the mid-section, leading to defeat by the same score.

And Sheila Howells’ rink struggled to gain a foothold, losing 28-9.

It was a much better performance at Beaufort as Gilwern won on one rink, tied another and lost on the third, suffering a narrow 53-51 loss.

Jill Howells’ rink took control from the fourth end to win 24-14.

Sheila Howells’ rink held the lead for 15 of the 18 ends, before the hosts managed to draw level to tie 18-18.

And Pam Healy’s rink fell behind in the second half to lose 20-8.

The men’s Monmouthshire BA team played a league game against PILCS at Common Road on Saturday.

Although each team won two rinks, PILCS secured victory 86-78.

Mark Wells’ rink built a substantial lead and then held off a late fightback to triumph 25-20, while Mike Fulton’s rink scored one shot only on the first nine ends but then turned the tables to win 17-16.

Tony Corfield’s rink was leading until the final end when they conceded heavily to lose 24-20.

And the opponents on Richard Davis’ rink were always in control, winning 26-12.

The ladies play Merthyr West End on Thursday afternoon (13th) and the MBA men visit Oakdale Welfare on Saturday (15th).
