TEN tries, seven converted by captain Adam Howells, made it a comprehensive win for Crickhowell away to Old Tylerians.
Following a training session prior to the game held at Parc Broyd under the supervision of former All Blacks captain and current New Zealand community coach, Wayne 'Buck' Shelford, the Crickhowell side showed a determination not seen for some weeks.
Coaches Mark Withey, Alan Taylor and Jim Aylett acknowledged Shelford's input and took on board many of his ideas and observations, imparted them to the players, who put them in place.
Not that Old Tylerian folded - they were just not able to keep up with the pace of the Crickhowell effort. The home team have been beaten before this season but such was the level of the Crickhowell performance that even though their opposition threatened their line, Crickhowell are the only side that the Old Ts have failed to score against.
It could have been worse, because a very short goal area saved them further points against, when Joe Powell, after some brilliant work in broken play made the goal touchdown area only to ground the ball on the adjoining soccer pitch!
The effort deserved so much more. Powell was a real live wire and his performance really caught the eye. Well supported by Dan Haymans, and Andrew Reynolds in the backs, who both got on the try sheet, the pack were not to be left behind as Alan Taylor, Sean Buck and Chris Reynolds joined them from the forwards.
Everyone played well and it is difficult in such a comprehensive win to single anyone out for a special mention. Following the training session the backs attacked the ball, running on to passes and although Old Ts. did their best to stem the flow it was a lost cause as Haymans, off the gain line, and Andrew Reynolds, hitting the gain line at pace from fullback, created try scoring opportunities.
Upfront a dominant scrum excelled and with Matt Poole, playing his best game of the season, well supported in a ball carrying role by Jim Aylett, Alan Taylor and Sean Buck there was only going to be one result.
Ed Jones made a welcome return to the side making such a contribution to the team. His ball winning ability on the floor is second to none and the number of times that opposition possession was turned over was thanks to Jones' prowess. This Saturday Crickhowell welcome Aberbeeg RFC to Parc Broyd with a 2.30pm kick-off.
