ABERGAVENNY Tennis Club enjoyed a summer season of successes with one men’s and two women’s teams in the South Wales Courtstall League, and one men’s, four women’s and two mixed teams in the Cymru Kitchen League

The SW Courtstall Men’s Team came top of Division Four East and will gain promotion next summer.

The crucial fixtures were against Cwmbran ‘A’, home and away, and the spoils were shared with both matches finishing three rubbers each and both teams won their away matches on a games or set count. Apart from a loss away to Mackintosh the team won their remaining matches convincingly.

SW Courtstall Women’s First came top of Division One East, only losing one of their 12 matches.

Top honours to Becky Rogers who won 18 of her 20 matches and Brenda Saunders who won 20 of her 22. Becky and Brenda combine Becky’s fantastic ground shots with Brenda’s net play.

They were brilliantly supported by the pairing of Alice Garlick and Sophie Davies, using Sophie’s youthful attacking shots with the consistency of the experienced Alice to win eight out of their 10 matches.

The rest of the squad, Lisa Fawkes, Patsy Roseblade, who together were the queens of the third set tie-break, and Judy Parsons and Mary Morgan, all contributed with valuable wins in many of the matches, showing great team spirit.

Special mentions to players who stepped up when needed - Mary Jeon, winning all of her four matches, Rachel Williams, Angela Sharp, Sarah Miles and Ashley Barcinella (who travelled to Penarth at late notice, winning both matches!).

The team (pictured) then played a nail biting decider against other divisional leaders and were successful in is winning this play-off match to gain promotion into the Premier Two Division.

The S W Courtstall Women’s Second, captained by Rachel Williams, worked hard to come top of Division Four and will gain promotion next summer.

In the Cymru Kitchen League the club again faired brilliantly with the Mens’ Team finishing top of their division to gain promotion to Division One.

Of the four women’s teams the first team will remain in the Premier Division and were runners up in the Senior Cup.

The Second team had a more difficult time and the third and fourth teams were neck and neck in Division One.

The Second Mixed Team came third in Division 1, improving its position in the latter half of the season. The team was strengthened by a couple of juniors who played their first season of senior tennis. In the final of the Mixed Minor Cup the team lost by just two games and special mention to Geoff Ball and Caroline Hinchliffe who won all their sets.

The First Mixed Team came top of the Premier Division on maximum points. The team took on AlltyrYn, Cwmbran ‘A’, Usk and Chepstow, both home and away.

The regular partnership of Becky Rogers and Lloyd Barcenilla with their contrasting baseline and volley play resulted in only one match lost, a great achievement.

Jack Grayer paired up with drop shot legend Brenda Saunders and they played in some tough, hard fought matches, the final outcome always giving Abergavenny the winning points.

Jeremy Callard and Lisa Fawkes made up the other regular pairing and were an unstoppable combination.

This year’s captain, Becky Rogers, would also like to thank Alice Garlick, Carys Howard-Rees and Bryan Easton for their contribution.
