Tredegar Ironsides - 13

Abergavenny RFC - 53

ABERGAVENNY travelled to Tredegar hoping for a victory to consolidate their league position but never dreamed they would win so emphatically.

A perfect start saw number eight Paul Cornock run in a try under the post from 25 yards out, with scrum half Lewis Evans kicking the conversion.

Within two minutes, the Ironsides answered in kind with an unconverted try of their own.

Aber's response was to almost immediately score again when a trademark run by Stuart Davies and sublime inside ball to Ian Davies, enabled the supporting player to run in unchallenged, 5-12.

The Irons countered again and a fine passage of play from one wing to the next saw them score a deserved try in the corner for the fourth try in 10 minutes and the promise of a very entertaining game.

A penalty from Lewis Evans extended Aber's lead, followed by a burst down by the wing by full back Will Williams who passed on contact to release Ian Davies who scored his second, converted by Evans.

Aber now had the key to the door and the Irons had no answer to their searing breaks.

A try by Tom Rees saw Aber close the first half with a solid 14 point cushion and looking good for a bonus point victory.

Consequently, Aber began the second-half with a licence to thrill and a resolve to run at every opportunity.

Turnover ball on their 22 was fed to Ian Davies who took on the entire Irons defence alone and ran in from 75 yards for his third hat trick of tries this season, converted by Evans, 13-34.

The flood gates opened and the Ironsides had no answer to the tidal wave of attacks Aber threw at them. The hapless Tred players repeatedly kicked the ball into the arms of Aber's willing backs who responded with venom.

Ian Davies ran in for his fourth try, followed by one from Nathan Byrne who exploded along the touchline and side stepped the full back to score from deep.

The most popular try of the day came when Cornock chipped the ball into the corner where hooker Gareth Williams was lurking unmarked in the Tredegar 22. Williams chased and dived on the ball in the dead ball area with an inch to spare, 13-53.

The busiest man on the home side was now the man changing the score board and he had to receive treatment for cramp.

Aber showed no mercy and substitute scrum half Sandy Aitken made a run, and popped a pass to blind-side flanker Sean Buck who ran in under the posts, converted by Stuart Davies, 13-60.

Stuart Davies added another try to finish the scoring as Aber ended the game in high spirits.

This Saturday, Aber are playing Caerphilly in their last home game of the season. Kick-off is at 2.30pm.
