YOUNG people in Llanfoist have a brand new and exciting youth club opening next month.
Youngsters aged 10 to 17 are invited to Llanfoist Village Hall on Thursday, June 3 at 6pm to find out what is going on and to meet the organisers.
To start the programme, seven activity taster sessions are planned for Thursday evenings during June and July.
These activities are volleyball, mountain biking, running a disco, street dancing, bread making, African drumming and rugby. Alternative activities will be available.
The organisers will be asking those who come along on June 3 what activities they want after the initial programme. In the future the plan is to meet in two groups, the younger ones (10-13 years) from 6 to 7.30pm and the 14-17year olds from 7.30 to 9pm.
There will be a small charge of £1 per week to help cover the cost of hall hire etc.
Laura Hunt will lead the team. A qualified youth worker and graduate, Laura was employed until recently as a youth engagement worker in the Communities First area and is currently working for Monmouthshire Youth Service.
She will be working voluntarily as there is no funding available at present.
She will be supported by Govilon resident Cathy Cleveland, an active member of Llanfoist Players, Angela Brinkworth and Jan Shivel, Llanfoist residents. Richard Lewis and Rev'd John Hughes will also assist.
Parents of young people in the village are particularly welcome to join the team.
Laura Hunt said, "This is a great opportunity for all the young people in Llanfoist to get involved in informal and fun activities, and get to know others from the area.
"I am looking forward to opening the youth club and hope it will become a permanent facility for the community of Llanfoist."
Richard Lewis from adventa, Supporting Rural Enterprise, added, "Of all the villages in north west Monmouthshire, Llanfoist is special in having a large population of young people and absolutely no youth provision.
"It has taken a long time to get a group together to start a youth club here and we are very grateful to Laura for taking the lead. Now we just need the support of young people and their parents to make sure the club continues."
