AN action group whose aim is to clean up the streets of Abergavenny is relaunching with a community litter pick on March 9th.
Keep Abergavenny Tidy (KAT) has collected together a small but dedicated band of volunteers and an appeal has gone out for more people to join as they declare war on the growing problem of litter.
An inaugural meeting of of the group will be held on Wednesday, March 6th, at the Abergavenny Constitutional Club, Park Road, at 7.00pm, and an open invitation has been issued to anyone interested in attending.
The KAT initiative is backed by Keep Wales Tidy, Monmouthshire County Council and Abergavenny Town Council. Some residents have already signed up as litter champions and other litter-picks are run by Friends’ groups representing Abergavenny’s green spaces.
The new group hopes many more volunteers will step forward to look after their own patch, perhaps their street – or a section of it – while others help to clean up their own favourite place.
After registering with KAT, volunteers will be covered by insurance and provided with an anti-litter kit which they will also be able to use in their own time.
The first community litter pick will be held on Saturday, March 9th when an information stall will be set up between 10.00am and 2.00pm at High Cross (Red Square) in the town centre. ?
The litter pick squad will start off from there at 12 noon, Anyone arriving later will be given briefing notes and directions. The area selected will probably be Mill Street / Swan Meadow. The session will finish at 2.00pm - before the rugby begins!
Future community litter picks include one on April 13th as part of the KWT Spring Clean Cymru 2019 campaign between March 22nd and April 23rd. Others are planned for July 13th and September 14th before the Food Festival.
Plans are being drawn up to contact other groups and schools to see how they can help.
