A NUMBER of community buildings in the Abergavenny area have been targeted by thieves along with a domestic dwelling near Gilwern.

Abergavenny police are linking the three incidents that occurred overnight on Monday, July 18.

Among the known targets was Llanfair Kilgeddin Village Hall, which was broken into and had a number of items stolen from inside.

The Chronicle understands that an industrial sized unit was also removed from its position within the kitchen, but the thieves were unable to get it out of the building.

Another attempted break in occurred at the Govilon Football Club, but the thieves failed to obtain entry to the club house.

Police believe that other community buildings may have been targeted, but these have not yet been reported to them.

The police are also investigating a break in a domestic dwelling at Glanbaiden between Govilon and Gilwern in which a number of items were stolen during the same time period.

Abergavenny police Sergeant Tony Patey said that it was likely that the culprits were not from the locality and were using the Heads of the Valleys road as a quick way to navigate themselves around the area.

He added: "Whilst we are on top of what's happening in the Abergavenny area we feel that these community buildings have been targeted by travelling criminals.

"We have undertaken a number of operations recently targeting scrap metal thieves and frequently monitor the town's exits for known criminals.

"Whilst the thefts this week have been centred around community buildings, its the easy pickings from unlocked vehicles that are a constant problem to us and car owners need to be aware of their own security."
