Coleg Gwent students and staff recently took part in a charity football match to raise money for the charity Bradley Lowery’s Fight.

Bradley Lowery is a 5 year old boy who has recently been diagnosed for the second time with neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that mostly affects children and babies. Bradley was first diagnosed when he was just 2, however, after a brief period in remission, his cancer has returned.

Lecturer Gareth Betts heard of Bradley’s battle in December in the days before the college broke up for Christmas and wanted to do something to help the family raise the money they need for Bradley to travel to receive treatment that is not available in the UK.

Following a meeting with fellow lecturer Kelly Cook and sports students at Usk campus, a 5 aside football tournament was arranged. In total, £120 was raised thanks to sport, public services and outdoor activities students and staff.

In addition, it was Bradley’s wish to receive as many Christmas Cards as possible so all the staff and students sent him a card helping to make his wish come true.

Gareth Betts said: “The Bradley Lowery fight is something that caught my attention shortly before we were due to break up for Christmas and I really wanted to try and raise and some money for his cause in the little time we had before the holidays. I would like to arrange some more fundraising activities to raise money for this brave little boy and his family over the coming year.”
