A LONG-serving Crickhowell hotelier has died after four decades at the helm of one of the town’s most popular venues.

Judy Hindmarsh, who died on Monday, March 26, ran the Bear Hotel for forty years after a successful career as head of makeup for the BBC. Under her stewardship she turned the establishment into one of the most successful and highly regarded inns in Wales.

A statement from the Bear Hotel on the its Facebook page reads, “It is with great sadness we announce the death of Mrs Judy Hindmarsh, affectionately known as Mrs H.

“She was formerly head of the makeup department at the BBC and then became the driving force at the Bear Hotel for the last forty years. She died peacefully this morning, Monday, March 26, surrounded by her family.

“Mrs H will be greatly missed by her family, her many friends and all the staff. Steve and Sam wish to thank everyone for their kind thoughts.”

Comments from locals have reiterated the popularity of the long-serving landlady, with one customer stating, ‘So so sad to read this. She epitomised the word ‘lady’ and was always so cheerful. She will be greatly missed.’

A former member of staff commented, ‘So sorry to hear this sad news I have very fond memories of The Bear and Judy from the years that I worked with her.’

Another described her as, ‘An iconic figure who will live long in the memories of those of us whose lives have passed through The Bear.’
