AN alcohol dispersal order has been hailed a success by police.

The town's crime and reduction officer, PC Andy Charles told the Chronicle that the dispersal, which targets 'hotspots' including Swan Meadow, Castle Meadow, Lower Monk Street, Monk Street, Cross Street and the bus station has resulted in a drop of offences.

Following the success of the dispersal notices, which is due to end later this year, PC Charles hopes that alcohol free zones could be introduced in two more areas - giving officers the right to confiscate alcohol. Those committed can face a fine of up to £500 or be arrested. PC Charles said over the last year there has been 130 incidents relating to alcohol and youths congregating around Cross Street. He said, "Residents are very concerned about alcohol misuse and anti-social behaviour, we are pleased that there has been a reduction in offences since the dispersal."
