Bryntirion Athletic -2

Goytre -3

GOYTRE's giant killing prowess was again in full effect on Saturday as they caused a major upset in the first round of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup and kicked Division One side Bryntirion out of contention.

Welsh League Division Three outfit Goytre, who this season are helmed by former Cwmbran Town boss Sean Wharton, remain undefeated in both league and cup and have now taken the scalp of two Division One teams - the former belonging to Caerau Ely who they thrashed 3-1 in the Welsh Cup earlier this season.

On Saturday Goytre took the initial lead 15 minutes in when Luke Prosser fired home a screamer to plant the first seeds of doubt in Athletic's head.

After their shaky start, the home side managed to steady the ship and set up stall with an equaliser that saw the two teams on honours even as they entered the interval.

Come the second half and Athletic laid down the law with another strike which secured them the lead, and in all likelihood the game.

However, in the dying embers of the match, up popped Luke Prosser like a phoenix from the ashes to bag his brace and take the game to extra time.

With their heads up and bags of confidence to boot, Goytre's Matthew Prosser made sure it was strictly a family affair by shooting home the winner, and earned his club passage into the next round.

A delighted club chairman Dave Melmoth told the Chronicle, "We're on a roll this season and although it's still very much early doors, everyone at the club is hoping that this is our time to really go for it and make our mark.

"We've been hanging about in Division Three for far too long now, and hopefully this will be the season when we put things right."

Goytre return to the fray this Saturday when they face Division Two's AFC Porth in the Welsh Cup.

Undy Athletic - 3

Govilon - 0

GOVILON have been out of action since their victory at Pentwynmawr in early September and on Saturday the old proverb that 'rust never sleeps' proved true as they went 3-0 down at Undy.

Under pressure from the kick-off, only Mark Waddon's fine goal-line clearance kept the Govilon goal intact after 15 minutes.

Keeper Sam Morris saved twice in a minute moments later, punching one goal bound effort to safety and then managing to claw another effort over the bar.

The few chances which fell their way went unconverted and the game remained 0-0 at half-time.

After the re-start the game continued in the same fashion, with Undy making the breakthrough when a shot was deflected past Morris into his goal.

This prompted a triple substitution by Govilon and heralded their best spell of the game. Brimble in the Undy goal saved brilliantly from a Leon Gilchrist strike and excelled again seconds later when keeping out a Jamie Laurent pile driver of a volley. As Govilon searched for an equaliser Undy struck again with five minutes left, and added a third with a minute remaining.

On Saturday Govilon are home to Abertillery Excelsiors (3.00pm), and welcome back Dean Morgan and Rhys Whiteman currently representing Wales in the Uefa Regions Cup in Croatia.

Elsewhere in Gwent County Division One Cwmffrwdoer Sports were held to a 3-3 draw by the Blaenavon Blues.

In Division Two Mardy were dealt a massive 9-0 mauling by the Newport Corinthians.

And in Division Three the Abergavenny Thursdays problems nose-dived even further when Pill pounded them to the tune of 0-8.
