A 58 year old Abergavenny woman was rushed to hospital this morning after being stabbed by a man as she walked along the Hereford Road.
The road was closed as police forensics teams gathered evidence following the knife attack that happened at approximately 10.10am.
The woman suffered stab wounds to her body and has been taken to the Nevill Hall Hospital. She is not in a life threatening condition.
A 39 year old man from the Newport area has been arrested and is currently in police custody.
Officers have recovered a knife that they believe was used in the incident.
Patrols have increased in the area, house to house enquiries are taking place, and officers are speaking to a number of witnesses.
Superintendent David Johnson said, "Officers have been in the area throughout the day conducting patrols and carrying out house to house enquiries. A number of witnesses have been spoken to and I would ask that anyone with concerns or information about the incident doesn't hesitate to contact us."
