Drivers are flouting the law and racing along stretches of local roads at double the speed limit, a volunteer group said last week.
Thousands of speeding vehicles have been captured since Usk Speedwatch set up just two years ago.
Volunteers said they’ve caught some drivers blasting along at double the 30 mph limit along Abergavenny Road drawing away from Usk town centre.
After setting up a speed monitor, in partnership with GoSafe and local police, volunteers snapped nearly 19,000 drivers over six days this year, with over 3,000 flouting the speed limit.
The team is also subject to routine abuse, with drivers slowing down to shout obscenities and goading the speed watchers as they commit their free time to try and change driver habit along a stretch of road common to accidents.
A Monmouthshire County Council spokesman said, “Officers from Monmouthshire County Council have received correspondence from residents and the Usk Speedwatch group and are disappointed to learn of motorists persistently disregarding the existing speed restrictions on Abergavenny Road, Usk.
“We are committed to providing a safer highway network for all users, and will continue to work with Gwent Police, GoSafe, Usk Town Council and the Usk Speedwatch group to achieve this.”
