An Abergavenny school-boy who grew his hair long during lockdown has raised over £1,000 for charity after having his hair cut short.

10-year-old Oscar Pearson – who attends Ysgol Gymraeg Y Fenni – chose to have his hair cut short after learning of The Little Princes Trust, a charity that provides free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Oscar also decided he would raise money for charity by having a sponsored hair-cut with donations going to BBC Children in Need.

Speaking about the hair-cut, Oscar’s mum Michelle Pearson said: “Oscar’s grandmother lost her hair because of the treatment she received for cancer. Oscar said to his Nan one day, ‘You can have my hair’.

‘‘As lovely and kind as his gesture was, we knew this wouldn’t be possible.

‘‘However, we had heard of a charity that makes wigs for children from donated hair.

‘‘From that moment on Oscar decided when the time came to cut his hair, this is what he wanted to do.”

After growing his hair long, Oscar finally had it cut short on Saturday September 25 at the Barber Shop in Abergavenny and has so far managed to raise £1,100 for Children in Need with donations still coming in.

Following the hair-cut, Michelle said: “My husband Mike and I are so proud of Oscar for his decision to donate his hair to The Little Princess Trust and to raise money for BBC children in Need.

‘‘Oscar has always been such a kind and generous boy, and he has been amazed at how much money he has been able to raise for charity.”

Oscar has received plenty of messages of support for his fundraising efforts including Debbie and the team at the Barber Shop who donated money and thanked him for being ‘such a loyal customer and choosing such a worthy charity’.

Michelle added: “Oscar would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated as well as Debbie and the team at the Barber Shop for cutting his hair.

‘‘He has been so humble and thankful of all the support and kindness everyone has shown, and hopes the money raised will make a big difference to the charities.”
