BRYN-Y-CWM Area Committee has pledged to give the total money needed to provide medals for the schools Olympic festival next year.

Spearheaded by Councillor Douglas Edwards, the Olympic festival will include the ten primary schools in the Bryn-y-Cwm area in July next year.

The festival will see key stage two students take part in series of sports that are not available at the schools such as wheelchair basketball, goal ball and fencing.

In true Olympic tradition, a opening and closing ceremony will be performed by Dance Blast.

While a trip to an athletics stadium in Cardiff will be available for key stage one students in May.

The overall total of the festival and stadium trip is £3,423 including £1,000 for medals which councillors at a recent meeting of Bryn-y-Cwm Area Committee voted to fund.

It is hoped that community councils will also contribute to the cost.

Councillor Edwards told the meeting that secondary school were not keen on taking part as the students already have a full programme of athletic competitions, as have primary years five and six.

"The head teachers were of the opinion years five and six would not be included due to the very busy programme those years have in the summer term," said Councillor Edwards.

"It was also agreed that years one and two would be better served by going to the stadium in Leckwith which would demonstrate various athletic sports and compare their achievements against world records."
