ABERGAVENNY RFC has paid tribute to one of its young players who collapsed and died just moments after leaving the pitch following a Saturday afternoon match.
Lewis Smith, who was 21 years old was a much loved and committed player at the club, who was playing for the Quins away at Gwernyfed when the tragedy occurred.
The cause of death is not yet known and a post-mortem examination was due to take place earlier this week.
An Abergavenny RFC club spokesman said, "The club, as one, is stunned with the devastating news and is in mourning.
"We are grieving for the sudden loss of a fine young man who was devoted to the club and had represented the club from every age group since joining as an eight-year-old.
"Lewis had represented the First XV several times this season as a powerhouse in the second row.
"Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Lewis's family at this sad time.
"All our efforts and thoughts are with Lewis and his family as we all try and cope with this moment of sadness in our own way.
"The club is a large family and we must find solace in each other's company as we unite during this difficult time in support of each other and Lewis's family."
Hundreds of people have already joined a Facebook tribute site to the former King Henry VIII School pupil and expressed their feelings of loss and love for the popular player known affectionately as the 'gentle giant' and 'big Lew'.
The Abergavenny Chronicle would like to offer its condolences to Lewis's family and friends and all at the town's rugby club.
