HRH Duchess of Cornwall visited Usk on Thursday to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the UK's biggest community gardening campaign, the Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom. Excited residents flocked to the town to greet the Duchess, as she had visited Usk Primary Schools award winning garden, visited two of the most popular houses from the Usk Open Gardens, and was given a guided a tour around the market square to see all of the hard work put in by the Usk in Bloom volunteers. The Duchess took the time to plant an apple tree at the primary school and enjoyed seeing the Usk in Bloom mural commissioned by David Samsom and created by Claire Lovell. At the end of her visit she unveiled a butterfly sculpture, created by Adam Humphreys, which symbolises Usk town and the growth of Usk in Bloom. Usk in Bloom Chair Tony Kear said, "We were extremely honoured and delighted to have been asked by the RHS to host the Duchess and to welcome her to Usk. What a wonderful lady she is taking the time to talk to as many people as she did. "I know our volunteers both past and present as well as our partners were incredibly excited at the visit and it was my privilege on their behalf to showcase Usk at its very best."
