THE relocation of Abergavenny's Brewery Yard market stalls has initially been deemed a success with the market being described as "bustling" with people.

With work being carried out to the Brewery Yard, the market stalls that normally reside there on a Tuesday, have been relocated to the cattle market, High Cross, Nevill Street and St John's Square.

In its first week of operation the initial signs appear to be positive with Abergavenny Town Councillor Martin Hickman, claiming the new locations were busy with people.

"I did walk down to the cattle market to see the stalls and I was pleased to see it was bustling with people," he said.

"With some of the stalls undercover it reminded me of Hereford's market and I think that it will be good in the Winter months when it's colder and there's more wind.

"It was obviously a bit of a dull day and we did have some rain about 11am so it was good to see it so busy.

"I also walked around town to see the stalls by the Post Office and Nevill Street and I was very impressed as I think it links the town together a lot better.

"I hope the traders are happy - it is obviously something that has got to happen so I hope it is appreciated."

The market traders will situated in their new location for the next 15 months as work is being carried out to the Brewery Yard.

The work being carried out includes a new pedestrian area, a cafe, a new toilet facility and public artwork.

Deputy Leader of Monmouthshire County Council and Cabinet Member for regeneration services, Bob Greenland added, "The first outdoor market at the cattle market site was held today (Tuesday, October 14).

"We've erected extra signs that will be put up throughout the town showing market visitors how to get to the new site of the outdoor market.

"It's great to see that the work on Brewery Yard is starting as it marks the beginning of a very exciting chapter for Abergavenny."
