Residents in Monmouthshire will benefit from a £1m windfall for local transport projects to improve walking, cycling, road safety and car travel, it has emerged.  

A total of £349,000 has been allocated by the county council to finalise plans for the proposed Llanfoist Active Travel bridge – a project which aims to provide a safer and more convenient walking and cycling route between Llanfoist and Abergavenny. Construction is expected to be complete for summer 2018.

Meanwhile, £350,000 will help deliver an ambitious £1m two-year programme to further improve the walking and cycling environment in central Abergavenny – extending the public realm work onto Lion Street and Frogmore Street. 

Monmouth will receive £260,000 for improvements to the A40/A466 Wyebridge junction and £38,000 for a new zebra crossing on Wonastow Road.

Paul Matthews, Monmouthshire’s Chief Executive said, “The town centre improvements in Abergavenny have been well received. It’s really positive that this work will continue into the next financial year. The funding for Monmouth should help to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.”
