Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire has called for Wales to receive its fair share of the £1billion pound deal between the Conservatives and the DUP.
Under the normal funding process (known as the Barnett formula), if Northern Ireland were to receive £1billion in block grant funding, Wales would receive £1.67billion. Yet Wales has been denied additional funding as a result of this deal.
Commenting on the deal, AM Kirsty Williams said, “During the general election Theresa May repeatedly said there was ‘no magic money tree’ yet to save her own government she has managed to find one. In fact she has managed to find £100million for every DUP vote. Just think what an extra £1.6billion could do for schools, hospitals and other public services in Wales.
“So far Welsh Conservative MPs have rolled over and accepted this. This is unacceptable. They should be putting people before party politics and fighting Wales’ corner, lobbying their Conservative colleagues in Westminster to restore the principle of fair funding.
“A failure to do so will let everyone in Wales and indeed Brecon and Radnorshire down.”
