More than 1,000 Partnerships in Care (PiC) patients and staff UK-wide took part in the ‘Tour of PiC’ this year, raising £10,000-plus through both online and offline donations and further money given in support of the initiative.

Among the fund-raising efforts was a ‘Peak a Week’ challenge undertaken by PiC’s Aderyn facility at Penperlleni near Abergavenny, which involved climbing the Blorenge, Skirrid Fawr and Pen-y-Fan mountains.

Patients and staff making up the team found the Blorenge an extremely tough yet enjoyable experience and took pictures of the breath-taking views.

Occupational therapist Kathryn Davies said, “It was an absolute pleasure to be amongst such high-morale and team spirit to reach the end goal.”

Fifteen staff and patients then turned out for the Skirrid Fawr climb.

After that, in preparation for the third and toughest assignment - scaling Pen-y-Fan on August 23 - the staff and patients also tackled the Sugarloaf Mountain.

Patients have since reflected on their experience of the climb.

One said, “I find walking invigorating. I felt the urge for adventure. That was how I felt to reach my goal”.

They have also expressed a real sense of achievement and satisfaction from their engagement in the challenge:

Comments included, ‘I loved the challenge. It pushed me to the limit’ and ‘I wouldn’t have got up there if it wasn’t for the group. They encouraged me’.

PiC Chief Executive, Joy Chamberlain said, “This was the third year our ‘Tour of PiC’ initiative has taken place. The event encourages staff and patients to get active, consider new challenges and help raise money for great causes. It is truly inspiring seeing so many staff and patients come together and achieve new things.

“This year, the chosen charities were Mind and Make a Wish Foundation in loving memory of two colleagues who passed away last year. Fundraising this year has surpassed our expectations and I am very grateful to some of our suppliers who have also generously donated and helped fund certain activities.”
