A free new social group for people aged 50+ living in Usk and the surrounding area is encouraging people to join.

The Age Cymru Gwent MHA Usk Social Group aims to prevent social isolation amongst older people living in and around Usk. The newly formed group came about after two social clubs from Age Cymru Gwent and Monmouthshire Housing Association (MHA) amalgamated this autumn.

With many older Monmouthshire residents living in rural areas or a significant distance from facilities such as libraries and community centres, the group offers people a chance to meet in a relaxed setting and get involved in a range of activities.

The group celebrated their Christmas party this month in MHA’s Plas Mawr communal lounge in Usk – their regular meeting place – with festive food and drink, a raffle, bingo, singing and dancing.

Gerard Gratton-Smith works for Age Cymru Gwent. He said: “I retired from working as an engineer aged 60 and began volunteering for Age Cymru Gwent almost immediately – that was 14 years ago now. I help run social clubs, exercise and tai-chi classes for older people across Monmouthshire and it’s great having this new group as a focal point for the community”

Gloria Wilson, 88, helped to organise the Christmas party. She said: “I’ve been here since first thing this morning preparing for today’s party. It’s lovely seeing so many older people enjoying themselves and the merging of the two social groups has worked really well.”

Age Cymru Gwent Team Leader Lesley Reynolds said: “I am so pleased that we are able to offer this service to older people who would otherwise be socially isolated. It’s a fantastic group and they really enjoy themselves.”
