AN Abergavenny mum who struggled with anxiety and post natal depression has launched an endeavour to combat the loneliness and isolation often experienced by new parents.
Mum of three, Chloe Skinner, told the Chronicle she wanted to create a group that was welcoming and safe for those who have felt similarly, and who may find it difficult to get to those sometimes overwhelming parent and child groups.
Starting just a week ago, the new club, based in Abergavenny Community Centre is aimed at parents of children of all ages, who may feel isolated, lonely or simply be struggling a bit with parenthood and who would like to meet other like-minded parents in a non-judgmental, welcoming space.
‘Loneliness is a topic which has been in the media a lot recently, but we often don’t talk about how it can affect parents,’ said Chloe.
‘The group aims to bring together parents from all backgrounds, with children of any ages to tackle isolation and the associated mental health issues. Together we can share advice, offer support and meet new people.’
Chloe is hoping the club will expand as she feels the demand for companionship at such a challenging time is essential. The club meets at 10:30am every Wednesday and is unique in that it welcomes parents to come along with or without their children.
She stated, ‘We have received a lot of support from the local community, and while we have made a modest start, I am hopeful that the group will continue to grow as the word spreads.’
Chloe has set up a Facebook page for the group at www.facebook.com/TheLonelyParentsClub.
he added, ‘If you have any questions, aren’t sure whether the group would be for you feel free to get in touch at [email protected] or call or text 07465 429 245.’
There is a suggested donation of £2 per visit but Chloe stresses this is optional and that money should not be a barrier to going along and joining in.
