A NEW bus shelter has been erected in the town centre following requests from local residents.
The new bus shelter adorns the bus stop layby on Park Road and is the result of residents living in Holywell Crescent and the Plas Derwen area having their voice heard.
They contacted their local councillor for some form of shelter from the wind and rain to be provided while they were waiting for a bus home after shopping in Abergavenny town centre.
Councillor Maureen Powell duly approached the local authority for help in providing a bus shelter and the request was later agreed for the work to be carried out.
Last week the installation work to install the new bus shelter was completed at a cost of under £3,000 – this includes cost of shelter, installation plus checks required to comply with regulations as the layby is located on a trunk road. Routes 3 and 43 use the stop regularly as well as 2, 45, 83, and X43.
Councillor Powell said: "A bus shelter has long been needed at the bus stop on Park Road opposite the side of Tesco for a long time now. It was very pleasing this week to see that it work to install it has now been completed before the wintery weather sets in again.
"I have spoken to the driver of the 43 town service bus who said that his passengers are delighted to have some shelter when having to wait in the rain while other Castle ward residents who regularly use this bus stop are equally grateful to have shelter after completing their shopping and waiting to return home."
