Work is finally set to begin on a pedestrian crossing in Goytre on a road that has seen over 180 collisions in the last five years.

The A4042, running between Newport and Abergavenny, has seen 184 collisions in the time period with over half of them being considered serious or fatal.

But a community campaign for a pedestrian crossing to be built in the village of Goytre, which the road runs straight through, finally has some good news.

“Road safety in Goytre has been a contentious issue for a number of years, and thanks must be given to Cllr Butler and her efforts in driving this forward,” said Peter Fox, the MS for Monmouth.

“I always say that issues like this are not resolved until we have spades in the ground, with this latest update confirming this will be sooner rather than later.”

“I will continue to monitor this until the crossing work is completed and the first pedestrian has used it.”

Work is now scheduled to get underway in January 2026, after the Transport Secretary, Ken Skates, signed off on the timeline for construction.

Commencing work at this time will allow for a single mobilisation over a seven-week period, avoiding the need for multiple stoppages. All road space bookings and traffic orders are now in place, with Welsh Government confirming they are prepared to proceed as planned.

“At last, the residents of Goytre will have their crossing. I thank and pay tribute to those who signed my petition back in 2022,” said County Councillor Jan Butler, who represents Goytre.

“There were many communications between Peter, myself and Welsh Government that followed; but at last, we have succeeded. This is local democracy at work and shows how positive change can be achieved by ordinary people.”

“This crossing will enable residents to safely use the public bus service and hopefully increase service usage securing it for generations to come.”
