IT’S one of the nation’s best-loved stories, a 200-year-old gothic tale of obsession, fear, superstition and triumph over the grave.
Mostly, whether consciously or not, it’s also a story of movement. The staccato motion of the inanimate made to walk again or, in the case of Cascade Dance Theatre’s version - to dance.
Celebrating 200 years since the publication of Mary Shelley’s masterpiece, Cascade Dance Theatre are bringing their version of Frankenstein to the Borough Theatre Abergavenny on Tuesday, November 20th.
Cascade’s artistic director, Phil Williams, is an international choreographer who was nominated as best male dance artist at the 2017 Wales Theatre Awards. He trained at London Contemporary Dance School and later joined their touring company, 4D.
Phil said, ‘It’s a piece of theatre that has it all, the relationship elements of love and rejection. We have the tragedy of a creature dealing with betrayal and prejudice which inevitably leads to anger and a desire for revenge. It asks the question, is a monster born or created?’
Described as visceral and engaging, Cascade’s cast of six performers and two musicians aim to interpret all the potency, drama and tragic inevitability that has made the original novel beloved of generation after generation.
The performance will feature live music and original composition by Jak Poore (Theatr na nÓg, David Walliams’“Gangster Granny” & “Awful Auntie”) and Ben Parsons (Cherry Ghost, Arctic Monkeys, BBC and Sky TV). Set and costume will come from Paul Shriek (Ballet Boyz, WNO, NDCWales).
Tickets for Frankenstein are available from the theatre’s box office 01873 850805 or the website boroughtheatreabergavenny.co.uk.
