Blaenavon Blues - 2
Mardy - 3
AFTER struggling to knock-out any kind of win this season, Mardy surprised everyone on Saturday with a spirited performance that saw them bounce back from a 2-0 away deficit to score three goals in the last 20 minutes and take the game.
"We've been threatening a win for awhile," revealed coach Matthew McCarthy after his team's match against the Blaenavon Blues, "A result like this has been on the cards for some time now, and hopefully this is the point from which we can begin to build and turn our season around."
In this Gwent County Division One encounter the Blues dominated the opening half of the game and went in to a one nil lead when Darren Harris headed home a superb cross from James Parfitt.
The Blues soon doubled their lead when defender Matthew Cox fired home from close range, and although continuing to dominate the game and create chance after chance, they failed to kill the game off - something, which has been a problem for the Blues all season long
The second started with Mardy applying more pressure, but the Blues still looked very dangerous when attacking.
17-year-old James Cox making his first team debut was unlucky not to open his account, and James Parfitt was also unfortunate not to add his name to the score sheet.
However, for all the chances that Blues had, they should be experienced enough to close out a game when they are winning two nil at home.
With twenty minutes to go the Blues allowed Mardy back into the game, five minutes later and Mardy were level, the Blues heads went down, and in the last five minutes Mardy scored the winner.
The Mardy strikes came from Arron Davies, Jordan Everitt, and James Wham.
A Blues spokesperson told the Chronicle, "While our second-half performance was a disgrace, credit must be given to Mardy for a spirited second-half display, and at the end of the game they were fully deserving of their first victory in what has been a troubled season for them to date.
"I would also say on the evidence of Mardy's second-half display this will be no means their last victory of the season."
McCarthy added, "This Saturday we face Pentwynmawr Athletic at home. Like us they are in the bottom four, so it is crucial we add another win to our tally if we're to build any kind of momentum."
Elsewhere the Blaenavon Blues prepare for the visit of Chepstow Town this Saturday for their Gwent FA Amateur cup second round tie. Kick off is 1.30pm at the Co-op Field.
