It’s a case of no room at the inn for most Welsh folk this Christmas, with the average household having to accommodate an additional five guests during the festive season.

One in ten will end up sleeping in the bath or car, and 70% will be wishing they’d booked into a hotel for a decent night’s sleep.

New research by DFS, the sofa specialist, has revealed that the Welsh are the most stressed region in the UK (37%) when it comes to the thought of hosting family this Christmas compared with just 20% of residents living in the North East of England.

While five additional guests is the average in Wales, some families (15%) have to find space for up to ten or more.

And it isn’t just the hosts who find it an upheaval – three in ten people in Wales spend at least one night away over Christmas, with more than 30% viewing the experience negatively rather than enjoying quality time with family and friends.

Wales’ top ten bug bears when staying away over Christmas:

1) Not being able to sleep in your own bed.

2) Not being able to stick to your usual routine.

3) Not getting any alone time.

4) Lack of space for people to sit comfortably.

5) Lack of places for people to sleep.

6) Having to pack up all the presents.

7) Queue for the bathroom.

8) Lack of chairs to go around the table.

9) The mess.

10) Having young children in the house.

It’s not just family and/or friends that hosts have to accommodate either. Almost 25% of people in Wales have to accommodate a dog and nearly 10% also have to welcome the pet cat and other furry guests including rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs!
